An overview of the Mercedes-Benz classic car models

Are you considering buying a classic Mercedes? Since there are many different types and variants, we have created an overview where you can find all the Mercedes-Benz classic car models from the early ’50s to the early ’90s.

Many people start their search with the idea of purchasing a Mercedes SL classic. These cars are very popular and well-known. However, the range of classic Mercedes cars is much broader, including various convertibles, coupes, sedans, a few station wagons, and even some ‘stretch’ models. Therefore, many more types have been produced than just the famous Mercedes SL generations.

This overview is designed to give you a clear picture of the options and existing models. We also provide a rough estimate of the budget needed to own and drive such a car in a technically reliable and attractive condition. This way, you can consider which types interest you most within your budget.

Buying a classic Mercedes-Benz

If you’re considering buying a classic Mercedes, it’s important to do so with the right information. This overview of 40 years of Mercedes-Benz classic cars presents all the models produced during that time, allowing you to assess your options and find what best aligns with your plans and preferences. The complete range can be categorized into three groups:

  • The SL-Class
  • The S-Class
  • The E-Class

These categories have remained consistent, even though they weren’t officially named as such back then. The name “SL” was introduced with the W198 in the 1950s, while “S-Class” became official with the W116 launch in 1972. The term “E-Class” only came into use in 1993 with the facelift of the W124 models. Although these names weren’t used at the time, the cars produced during this period fit perfectly into these three categories.

We’ve excluded the C-Class from our overview, as the first model (the W201, 190 series) in this segment was only introduced in 1982.

Which classic Mercedes is the best?

There isn’t a straightforward answer to this, as it heavily depends on what you’re looking for in a classic Mercedes. For instance, do you want a four-seater convertible with a substantial budget? Or is comfort and the ability to take long journeys more important, with a budget of around €30.000? Considerations like your specific requirements, planned usage, engine type, and investment potential all play a significant role.

These factors will help determine which classic Mercedes suits you best. Generally, all classic Mercedes models are built to a very high standard. However, due to their age, each model and engine comes with its own set of strengths, weaknesses, advantages, and disadvantages. It’s essential to examine any potential issues before purchasing to ensure that any necessary repairs can be factored into your budget.

Purchase the classic car that fits your needs

By familiarizing yourself with the available models, it becomes easier to make a good choice and buy the car that best aligns with your goals and dreams. The key factors to consider in your search for classic Mercedes cars are:

  • Budget: Prices vary significantly between different models. Check which options fit within your budget, considering the quality and overall condition you desire. If the price for a particular model ranges from €60.000 to €140.000, you can expect higher annual maintenance and repair costs in the lower price range to keep the car safe and reliable. Sometimes, a major restoration may even be necessary.

  • Number of Seats: Do you want to go out with just the two of you, or would you like to take along a friend couple? Do you have young children who want to ride along? Anything is possible, but choose the right model. There are various models with two seats, two-seaters with small back seats, and larger models with 4 or 5 seats.

  • Annual Mileage and Potential Trips: What you plan to do with the car is an important factor in your choice. Older Mercedes classics provide an authentic classic car experience, both in appearance and driving feel. On the other hand, younger cars tend to be more comfortable for longer journeys, such as a road trip abroad.

All other important choices, such as the color of the paint, the interior, any options, and equipment, are only relevant to consider once you know which model you want, and the real search begins.
